Athlete News: Florida State QB Jameis Winston Investigated For Sexual Assault

By Joe Burgett

Florida State may be #2 in the BCS rankings, but they could soon be losing a key member of the team. Star QB and potential Heisman Trophy favorite, Jameis Winston is being investigated for felony sexual assault charges stemming from a December 7, 2012 encounter. According to, a woman filed a sexual assault complaint with the Tallahassee Police Department on this day.

The woman claims that the assault was done with “physical force”. According to the Police Department report, the believed motive for the crime was “sexual gratification”. The woman claimed that drinking was involved before the issue took place.

The police report that was filed claimed that someone called police at exactly 4:01 am on the day in question. When police arrived, they took pictures of the area and the victim. Sources claimed that Winston was questioned by police at the time, but no former charges were put in place. He was described by police as muscular and polite in the report.

To be filed as a sexual assault, proof would have to be made that offender “penetrated the victim orally, anally, or vaginally.”

An investigation is described as ongoing by the Florida State Attorney. The Florida State University sent out a statement regarding the ordeal via a representative, saying:

“We are aware of a matter that was investigated by the Tallahassee Police Department almost a year ago. Because the investigation has not been closed by TPD, we cannot comment further at this time. We look forward to a speedy resolution of the issue. There is no change in Jameis Winston’s status.”

What does this mean for his status at Quarterback of the Florida State Seminoles NCAA wise? Currently, he will remain as the starting QB for the #2 Seminoles. The NCAA cannot hand down a punishment to Winston until a formal charge has been made, which means he will obviously play the rest of the season unless charges are made in a speedy way. Interestingly enough, the report claimed that Winston or whoever the man was who committed the crime was “5’11 max” and that he had straight hair. Winston is a 6’4 athlete who does not have straight hair. Despite the issue with the description, Winston is still considered a prime suspect.
